12.15.2017 – The Jeep is an iconic vehicle that served World War II and became a popular brand name producing sports utility vehicles. It was manufactured by several companies with Chrysler being the last one to hold the rights for the brand.

Matchbox has produced several iterations of the Jeep with its various models and makes. For the 2017 series Matchbox produced an all-new casting of one of Jeep’s iconic model the Gladiator, which is not the pick-up truck that you’d expect!

The Gladiator is one of the Jeep brand’s vehicle that is a full size pickup truck being produced from 1962 to 1988 from four companies that held the name. Originally, the Gladiator was the basis of the first post-war U.S. Army trucks designed to be civilian vehicles and adapted to military use. Numerous versions of the Jeep pickup were built in other markets, including Mexico by Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos.

Jeep Gladiator Concept

Matchbox produced a new casting of the Jeep Gladiator marking it for 2017, but this particular model actually looks different from its previous iteration that was mass produced and turns out it’s a concept.

This Jeep Gladiator concept was introduced in late-2004, which was not intended to be mass produced or sold. This was actually used as a demonstration "that a Jeep pickup was in the dark recesses of DaimlerChrysler's brain trust.

The Real Gladiator

The Gladiator concept features an open-air canvas roof, fold-down windshield, removable doors, and has an expandable truck bed. The Gladiator has a 2.8-liter, 4-cylinder common-rail turbo diesel engine that provides 165 hp (123 kW; 167 PS) and 295 lb•ft (400 N•m) of torque. The truck has a 6-speed manual transmission. Ground clearance is 13.7 in (348 mm), with a break-over angle of 23.2°, an approach angle of 47.6° and departure angle of 38.0°. Front and rear tires are 34 in (864 mm) and are mounted on 18x8-inch wheels. The Jeep Gladiator has a 1,500-pound (680 kg) payload.

Die-Cast Gladiator

Matchbox produced the Jeep Gladiator as a 2017 model for the mainline series, but did not indicate or give any more details about its basis. The ‘new model’ is produced its chassis in grey with detailed trim, while its introductory color in green.

This probably the best casting producing a licence brand like Jeep and the only thing that’s not in detail is the spare tire on its driver side on the right. But the rest is spot on capturing the 2005 Jeep Gladiator Concept that was in exhibit at the Chicago Auto Show nearly thirteen years ago.

Overall the Jeep Gladiator is great casting of the pickup, although not mass produced in reality it gets a second chance of life as a 1:64 die-cast scale from Matchbox that ever bit of a souvenir that you might find interesting.

“2017 Jeep Gladiator” is numbered 92 0f 125 die-cast cars released for Matchbox in 2017 and it was acquired at Big W in Westfield Marion for $1.40 AUD (currebtly retailed at $2.00 AUD or PhP 0.00 pesos) or PhP 56.00 in Philippine Peso, which was on a weekend 20% discount. Matchbox is distributed and sold in the Philippines by Richprime Global Inc now retailed at PhP 119.75 pesos!
