09.15.2017 – Matchbox is synonymous with the word “King” in their product even going back to the time Lesney was the original manufacturer of their brand that gave birth to Super Kings, the larger scale diecast vehicles.

With Mattel now being the manufacturer they still kept most of the brand’s identity when Matchbox produced of the King-related vehicles in the mainline. For 2017 they have added another utility vehicle with the Glass King!

Teased in the 2016 Matchbox Gathering along with the upcoming 2017 release, the Glass King is the latest casting to ever have its last name is ‘King” following with Ladder King (2005-2008), Quarry King (2008-Present), Pit King (2011-Present), and Aqua King (2011-2016) that adds to the tradition.

King of Glass Delivery

The Glass King is the latest model for 2017 that is introduced as a new casting, but if you take a closer look it’s actually a re-cast of previous vehicles like the Pit King and Cement Mixer (now known as Cement King for 2017) with a new body retaining the cab as the most familiar part of this new King incarnation.

This version released by Matchbox is another short card that only be found in supermarkets in Australia that some claims is a rare find, since you would rarely see a short card next to none in the Philippines and this Glass King card art is appealing.

Glassy Kind of Service

In the real world the Glass King can be a bigger scale truck that Matchbox no longer produced since being acquired by Mattel and you know the rest of its toy history. If Super Kings, where ever produced in the present day this would be one of those casting that can be produced for the bigger scale.

If the Glass King would be in reality the cab design would be some sort inspired from a heavy utility Iveco (Industrial Vehicle Corporation) truck known as the Trakker that can carry bigger glasses for high rise buildings.

The New King on the Block

The initial color in white with black stripes that have the “Glass King” logo on both sides is pretty much a solid construction, but the glass attached can’t be removed. The base chassis is in grey with unpainted spare tire that can be found underneath.

Overall the Glass King is an eye catching design using an existing cab from the Pit King with the entire body in solid plastic with detailed glass on both side secured for delivery in the construction site. This is one of those underrated casting if you don’t pay attention to its design, but up close a new King has arrived to deliver your Glass.

“Glass King” is numbered 30 0f 125 diecast cars released for Matchbox in 2017 and it was acquired during a end of month sale at Coles for $2.10 AUD (originaly retailed at $3.00 AUD) or PhP 84.00 in Philippine Peso. Matchbox is distributed and sold in the Philippines by Richprime Global Inc now retailed at PhP 119.75 pesos!
