02.01.2013 – Fillmore from Disney Pixar’s Cars is the other half of the odd couple with Sarge the old grumpy military jeep resident of Radiator Springs. The laid back Volkswagen van of the 1950s/early 1960 era has been one of the regular characters residing in Radiator Spring.

In reality Fillmore is the Volkswagen Type 2 microbus which has other names more popularly known as the Kombi in some parts of the world. The stereotypical hippie an evident having the signature sticker of a Peace sign that includes flowers and a license plate positioned to resemble a soul patch.

It has a license plate which reads “51237” a reference to May 12, 1937 which is Fillmore’s original voice actor, the late George Carlin’s birthday. There was a lot of characteristic trivia about Fillmore besides having some elements related to Carlin. The name Fillmore is a reference to the Fillmore East, a venue that was an epicenter for rock performances throughout the 1960s and 1970s (The Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix all made notable live recordings there, to name a few).

This version that was released under the “moving eyes” series featured lenticular or “hologram” stickers as eyes as to the previous version that was only painted. It was released in 2010 and was numbered #38 with a different card back unrelated to the one that had released Sarge’s “moving eyes” version.









Comparing Fillmore to the actual Volkswagen Type 2 microbus there’s not much difference as its still one of the iconic transport vehicle that became known for being driven by hippies back in the 1970s. It’s a vehicle that transports the whole family or a group of people who just having a laid back lifestyle. It’s one of the forerunners of modern cargo and passenger vans that other follow suit that gave rise to forward control competitors in the United States.

But overall the VW Kombi is known as the “hippie van” due to its counterculture movement in the 1960s and that’s how Fillmore was portrayed in Cars by the now deceased George Carlin and had a small role in Cars 2 re-cast and voiced by Lloyd Sherr.

The details on Fillmore definitely is something for you to have a closer look with those stickers and art who would not associate this van to the hippies who just want to flash the peace sign while you rock n’ roll driving it. Fillmore is a memorable character in Cars As voiced by George Carlin his voice is similar to "Al Sleet, the hippy-dippy weatherman", a part of Carlin's comedy routine in the 1970s.









A resident of Radiator Springs who owns an organic fuel shop (Fillmore's Organic Fuel) which features several flavors, and believes gasoline companies are lying to the public. His next door neighbour of course is Sarge who he banters and chats throughout the movie.

Rarely you’ll ever find a standard version of Fillmore with a “moving eyes” gimmick the most that is our right now is from Cars 2 with the “Team McQueen” badge on its front side doors. There are several variations of Fillmore that was produced by Mattel but this one is the most familiar version.



The World of Cars “Moving Eyes Fillmore is originally retailed at PhP 449.75 pesos and that was sold the last one in Gaisano Mall in Davao City. The latest version from Cars 2 with the "Team McQueen" badge is sold currently with the retail price point at PhP 499.75 pesos.
