12.21.2012 – Marty McFly is a fictional character from the 1985 hit movie “Back to the Future.” The 1980s defined music, movies, animation, and toys thus making them pop cultures of their time. Of course children of that particular era become inspired to make it on their own.
Take the band who was inspired by its fictional namesake character. Consider them urban legends now that they haven’t been playing in a while. Since the demise of NU107 two years ago things have not been the same on Philippine radio and all we hear is the common bubble gum pop music. (Please CLICK on the title for the full article) |
OPM (Original Philippine Music) has been recently struggling competing with foreign music most notably the invasion of Korean Pop and of course Gangnam Style that has become a global phenomenon. These days there’s too much glut that doesn't sound music at all.
Where are the good old alternatives or any indie rock music being heard on radio? They have been gone and most of the FM radio stations have been reformatted to cater the mass consumption. Rarely will you ever appreciate music now until you drop by SaGuijo Cafe and catch Up Dharma Down or find your favorite local band touring the country through Facebook.

If you know your music then you have heard about Marty McFly which was an indie band that first got its airplay on NU107 and had released its first and only album sometime in 2003. The five-man band with Rio Vargas, Gogie Sinson, Allan Montayre, Debbie Singson, and some guy named Leinil Yu.
I’m sure you’ve read or heard that name of the last guy before in that particular group which is quite as loud as their music can be heard at the height of NU107. The last time we heard them play was during a big event some five or seven years ago. The band slowly faded from the mainstream consciousness when Philippine music was struggling on its feet trying to survive the competition.

But you listen to the album it’s produced by a group of passionate people who listen to alternative rock music. Just like having a hobby that is into collecting toys or getting interested in photography which the same applies to these talented individuals. For lead vocalist Leinil Yu this is a personal hobby of being passionate about the music. Perhaps this must have been one of his things to do in the bucket list that he has accomplished that we might not know for sure.
What Marty McFly brings to the music scene is another flavour of sounds inspired by the indie bands of the 1990s that we should greatly appreciate. Some might not like it but depends on everyone’s perspective. Inspired by Weezer and Dinosaur Jr their last appearance was two years ago at Route 196. But then again there have been reports of the band’s sightings which was unconfirmed since they prefer to perform in a small event.
They prefer to be low profile and you’d be surprise that they give away their first album for free which is actually being sold at all record stores if you have an eye to look for it.
If you have no idea or still in search of their songs for download online here’s the list of that:
