09.23.2011 – Last September 16 and 17, 2011 the scientists from Autonomos Labs led by assistant Paul Czerwionka and project manager Tinosh Ganjineh making tests on the Volkswagen modified driverless car.

Czerwionka touches a 360 degree laser scanner on top of a car Berlin, Germany. The modified car is driven by a computer that steers, starts and stops itself.

They setup with the 360 degrees laser scanner on top of the car, a GPS system and other sensors monitor the surrounding traffic. A driver sits only for security reasons behind the steering wheel. Could be the next best thing we can get for the 21st century?

We were wondering when will be the age of the flying cars, but we are close to science fiction to science fact one step up at a time. We have to pass through the world of “The Terminator” first. The team behind Autonomos labs is part of the Artificial Intelligence Group of the Free University Berlin.

This was featured a few years ago when they where testing the Volkswagen modified Taureg in the desert. The autonomous programmed car is a first of its kind, which can drive by itself without any human assistance.

Looks like we are seeing more of this technology as it’s being developed moving to the new century. This might help the human drivers as car accidents have been taking its toll.

The tests conducted still needs a driver who sits for security reasons only behind the steering wheel. A breakthrough in technology someday will be incorporated to upcoming cars probably we will see this as part of the emergency measure for the driver’s safety in the future.

For now this is an interesting bit that technology moves forward with automated machines. Let’s hope SkyNet doesn’t become real or we will definitely see the age of the Terminators.
